B-VITAMINS: A Supplement Staple!

If you follow me on insta you may have seen me rave about my B-vitamin powders before (likely multiple times before...).

This is a product I was only introduced to in the last year and have been taking religiously ever since.


I thought I’d dedicate an entire blog to this supplement because it is honestly magic and we should all know about It.


Lots of brands do these powders and there are so many different ones on the market. But basically it is a powder which is made up of all the B-Vitamins - pretty self explanatory really. I prefer the powder form of this supplement simply due to the fact it is absorbed easier and faster by the body. If tablets or capsules are more your style then thats totally fine, there are heaps of those on the market!


Lets get straight into the benefits and why we alllllllll need this in our life!


METABOLISM


The B vitamins play a huge role in our bodies ability to appropriately metabolize the foods we eat. B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6 all have different responsibilities in ensuring the fats, carbs and proteins we eat are converted into energy for us to burn. Without these vitamins our metabolism can become sluggish and slow and we won't be getting the most out of our food. Ditch the fads and weird old wives tails claiming to "boost metabolism" and focus on getting in your B-Vitamins!!


ENERGY


 If our metabolism has become sluggish because our bodies are lacking the B vitamins it needs for proper metabolism, we will not obtain the energy we need from our foods, leaving us feeling tired and fatigued. This is a classic sign of vitamin B deficiency. The appropriate metabolism of food is essential for the production of energy within our bodies – so if we want energy, we need to support the pathways which create it!


For me this has been the biggest difference I’ve noticed taking this supplement and the reason I take it religiously. I have so much energy! And its consistent energy. I am literally go, go, go right up until I hit the pillow at night.


MOOD BOOSTER


 I’m sure we can all relate that every now and then our moods could do with a little kick up the butt! Vitamin B6 AKA Pyridoxine is your go to gal for a lil mood boost! Especially for those of us whom are the female kind.. B6 is involved in the metabolism of estrogen in our bodies, so if we are deficient this metabolism is slow or doesn’t happen very well, and we can get excess estrogen which contributes to PMS symptoms and hormonal imbalance symptoms – the tears, the anger, the HANGER, the oops I demolished a bar of chocolate again.. – we’ve all been there. ON TOP of this (and another strike to add to my book of strikes on the hormonal contraceptive pill) birth control pills can actually deplete the body of B-vitamins which is not ideal. So if you’re on oral birth control, maybe you should doubley consider a B-Vitamin supplement.


ADRENAL SUPPORT


 One of the B-Vitamins in particular is very supportive of the adrenal glands. Pantothenic Acid (B5) is critical to adrenal gland function. Our adrenal glands secrete cortisol and aldosterone which are involved in our fight or flight response. Unfortunately, these days we live extremely busy lives and being 'busy' has become the latest fashion! With these busy lives comes consistent secretion of cortisol because stress, whether it is a bear chasing you or a deadline for your latest assignment creeping up, all looks the same within our bodies - Cortisol. When our adrenal glands are constantly secreting cortisol they get a bit tired. Vitamin B5 is really helpful in that it prevents adrenal exhaustion, as it kind of just helps the adrenal glands do the job they already do and its very important they’re supported through this job because we do NOT want to end up with adrenal fatigue. Calling upon our relaxation techniques Is also a great way to take the pressure off our adrenals – we can all do with a bit more calm in our lives so incorporating yoga, meditation or whatever it is that tickles your fancy, can be super supportive of adrenal health and also prevent adrenal fatigue.


So there you have 4 super quick points to prove how amazing this little supplement is.


Also #disclaimer – although you can buy b-vitamin powders over the counter and they are relatively safe, if you have any questions or queries its always good to speak to a professional either at the health store your purchasing from, a naturopath or to your GP.


I am honestly the BIGGEST B-vitamin fan after what its done for my energy levels. It has also been a big contributor in getting my period back on track by decreasing the effects of stress on my body! This little bad boy will always have a spot on my staples list!
